Medea's prehistoric connections with Georgian culture are the basis of artists' ongoing

interest and re-understanding of this ancient mythological hero.

Choreographer Kote Purtseladze presented Greek myths and Euripides' play in the form of a

choreography. The young actors of the "New Theater" tell us the story of Medea

accompanied by classical music, dance, mime, and sign language, and despite the fact that

they are not professional dancers, they perfectly perform plastic tasks.

The concept of representation is not built on the linear development of a specific figure. The

stages of Medea's life, adventure, passion and destiny are brought to life in three different

characters. The performance is also important as it contributes to enriching the Georgian

theater space with choreographic culture.

Thea Kakhiani , Theatre Critic

Tbilisi's Vaso Abashidze was established in 1926 and was given the name State Theater among many other titles. His repertoire for ten years consisted only of musical comedies. Director, actor, composer, playwright, artist, and choreographer—many well-known Georgians—worked there.

Doiashvili took over as artistic director of the Tbilisi Music and Drama State Theater in 2004. He elevated Georgian theater to a new level through encouraging the theater to try new things and providing new possibilities for the expression of progressive ideas. the most recognized performances are "Macbeth," "(Mid)summer night Dream" by Shakespeare, "the lower debth M. Gorky," "Cyrano de Bergerac" by Edmon Rostan, "Pillowman" by McDonagh, "Tartufe" by Moliere, and many more. Being one of Georgia's most inventive and prosperous theaters, we have won numerous awards and honors and are continuing to gain not just national but also international recognition and reputation. Our theater opened a brand-new, highly-acclaimed stage in 2021.

The State Theater of Music and Drama relocated to a new location in 2021 and reopened with the new name "NEW THEATER".
