The performance is a contemporary interpretation of Friedrich Schiller's play, directed by David Tarba.
Set against the backdrop of modern Georgian reality, the production reimagines classical dramaturgy, transforming the theater into a space for social reflection and critical dialogue. The themes explored by Schiller — the abuse of power, moral dilemmas, and the restriction of personal freedom — gain new relevance in this context: a system that oppresses the individual and a love that defies authority.
Experimental in nature, the performance aims to explore and incorporate new theatrical forms into the stage language. To realize this vision, the production features original set design, a contemporary visual aesthetic, and specially composed music and costumes.
Theatre Studio 42 is an independent theater that opened in 2023. It is located in Didube, Tbilisi’s industrial center, at 114 Tsereteli Avenue, on the premises of TBILISI FACTORY. The theater was founded by Levan Tsuladze, renowned Georgian Theatre director, after he left leading position at State Drama Theatre.
The mission of the theater is to develop independent theatrical art as a vital necessity and to integrate it into the cultural, economic, and social fabric of Tbilisi.
Theatre Studio 42 has a capacity of 264 seats and, in addition to performances, is focused on educational projects and the development of modern technologies. Alongside its entirely unique stage and auditorium, the theater’s foyer is lively and engaging, featuring theatrical cafés and an exhibition space.
Though very young, by the end of its second season, the theater’s repertoire already includes 12 productions — ranging from classics and contemporary drama to documentary plays. Its educational programs have also gained popularity and are in high demand.
The development of theatrical art and its integration into the global cultural map is our mission. For that reason, we place great importance on international theater festivals, technological workshops, exchange projects, exhibitions, and conferences in various fields related to the theater profession. Co-productions are of particular interest to us, and we are actively working in this direction.
The theater does not have a permanent ensemble — both experienced actors and very young performers appear together on its stage.
Despite a challenging season (2024–2025), including a three-month strike and resistance movement, the theater premiered three new productions, won the grand prize at the TBC Bank Business Awards, and hosted several international projects.
