The Open Couple

The Ilia State University Theatre—the first and, for the time being, only professional theater within a Georgian higher education setting—opened in 2010 on the premises of the once-celebrated Theater Basement in Vake. The theater's main mission is to provide a foundation for the professional training and development of Ilia State University students in the theater arts. Currently, the theater supports the Master’s Degree Program, “Live Theatre Arts: Acting and Directing.”

The theater is always open to young directors and arts professionals, eagerly participating in their experimental and innovative projects. Productions at the Iliauni Theatre frequently feature students and alumni of Ilia State University's arts programs, providing vital training for their future professional careers. Operating as a venture project, the theater invites a new combination of directors and actors for each production. Consequently, it is not governed by a single artistic director and maintains no permanent ensemble.
