About the Performance

This September, the Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre will host the highly anticipated premiere of “The Death of a Christian,” a new physical theater production by The Movement Theatre. Inspired by the writing of legendary Japanese author Ryūnosuke Akutagawa, this multidisciplinary piece completely sheds spoken language, choosing instead to communicate through body movement, rhythm, and profound visual metaphors.

The performance dives into universal themes of faith, ultimate sacrifice, and human endurance. Imbued with a minimalist Japanese aesthetic, the staging relies on a highly symbolic visual language. By blending movement theater and choreography with cutting-edge digital technologies and visual arts, “The Death of a Christian” creates a mesmerizing, immersive environment that redefines contemporary storytelling.

Movement Theatre was founded in 2000 by Kakha Bakuradze. Since its establishment, the theatre has continued to engage audiences through constant innovation, compelling performances, and creative events. It is currently led by Artistic Director Ioseb Bakuradze.

Representing Georgia, the theatre has participated in numerous international festivals. Among its notable appearances was the International Shakespeare Festival in 2018 with Ioseb Bakuradze’s production of The Tempest. In the same year, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Georgia, the company performed at the River Bank Festival in Frankfurt. In 2019, the theatre was invited to perform in Munich, Vilnius, and Minsk. It has also taken part in many festivals across Europe.

This September, Movement Theatre will host an American theatre company, which will collaborate with its actors on the creation of a new performance.

Movement Theatre combines contemporary dance, mime, acrobatics, pantomime, physical theatre, ballet, martial arts and circus techniques, folklore, and original music. This unique artistic language makes its productions equally engaging for audiences of all ages and nationalities.
