About the Performance

Based on the world-renowned novel The Woman in the Dunes by Kobo Abe—one of the most significant and visionary Japanese writers of the twentieth century—this production explores the complex psychology of adaptation. It dives deep into how and why an individual eventually ceases to resist and chooses acceptance, suggesting that the true catalysts for this shift reside within human consciousness and interior transformation. In doing so, the work masterfully confronts questions of identity, personal crisis, and self-perception.

Yet, the core thesis of the performance remains unyielding: a person remains fundamentally free as long as they continue to struggle, regardless of the physical constraints they face. Staged at the Movement Theatre, the production unfolds as a boundary-pushing hybrid. Here, digital mechanisms and animations created through specialized techniques—including the active integration of artificial intelligence (AI)—do not merely decorate the background; they constitute an essential, living partner in the performance itself.

Running time: 60 minutes.

Movement Theatre was founded in 2000 by Kakha Bakuradze. Since its establishment, the theatre has continued to engage audiences through constant innovation, compelling performances, and creative events. It is currently led by Artistic Director Ioseb Bakuradze.

Representing Georgia, the theatre has participated in numerous international festivals. Among its notable appearances was the International Shakespeare Festival in 2018 with Ioseb Bakuradze’s production of The Tempest. In the same year, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of Georgia, the company performed at the River Bank Festival in Frankfurt. In 2019, the theatre was invited to perform in Munich, Vilnius, and Minsk. It has also taken part in many festivals across Europe.

This September, Movement Theatre will host an American theatre company, which will collaborate with its actors on the creation of a new performance.
