"Orpheus" is an original play by Giorgi Maisuradze, inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s painting The Death of Orpheus and Heiner Müller’s poem Orpheus Under the Furrows.
The play follows the final day of Orpheus before he is slain by the Bacchantes. Depicted as an exile, he is accompanied only by two young boys, stripped of the creative powers that once defined him as one of history’s greatest artists. All that remains is memory—his only refuge lies in recalling the glories of his past.
In a searing dialogue with the blind seer Tiresias, centered on the nature of art as an act of sacrifice, Orpheus’s final wish emerges: to transform his violent death into a work of art.
Theatre on Atoneli is a small, independent theatre founded in 2005. It does not have a permanent ensemble of actors but instead invites and hosts directors, performers, and artists from diverse professional backgrounds — offering them the opportunity to create and present work in a theatrical setting.
The productions at Theatre on Atoneli often feature works by young Georgian artists who bring fresh perspectives to the plays of internationally acclaimed contemporary playwrights.
