The fact that a brilliant Italian playwright wrote a play about Georgia is already inspiring. That’s why I am confident that this play deserves to be staged more often. It is richly endowed with all the artistic qualities that define the work of this remarkable playwright.

Goldoni’s play is a great training ground for actors; only highly skilled professionals can truly bring his theatrical aesthetics to life on stage. The actors of the Griboyedov Theatre are such professionals, and today we proudly present “The Beautiful Georgian Woman.”

Though written over 200 years ago, the play remains timely and powerful. Goldoni’s comedy exposes one of humanity’s greatest vices—tyranny, the relentless pursuit of power by any means necessary. Yet, he delivers this critique through comedy because Carlo Goldoni, the king of comedy, understands that laughter is a powerful force capable of overcoming tyranny.

“The Beautiful Georgian Woman” is set against the backdrop of civil wars in Western Georgia. Its central figure, Tamara—the beautiful sister of the ruler of Guria—is the focal point of multiple romantic pursuits.

Beyond its romantic intrigue, the play conveys profound ideas: peace is far more valuable than great wealth; only a united Georgia can be strong enough to withstand internal strife and external threats—from the Turks, Persians, and cruel Tatars alike. Ultimately, the play teaches that great wealth does not elevate a person’s worth, justice must be the foundation of any kingdom, and arrogance offends the dignity of its ruler.
