 About Performance

“Darispan’s Trouble” by David Kldiashvili is a landmark work of classical Georgian drama, masterfully blending humor and melancholy to explore family relationships, social pressures, and human vulnerability. Written at the end of the 19th century, the play remains profoundly relevant more than a century later. Its core questions regarding social status, economic hardship, family responsibility, and personal dignity continue to resonate deeply with contemporary audiences.

Director Giorgi Sikharulidze presents this Georgian classic through a bold and unexpected theatrical lens. Moving beyond conventional interpretations, he reimagines the piece in a contemporary theatrical language, striking a dynamic dialogue between the classical text and the modern world. Through innovative staging, vivid visual expression, and a fresh artistic perspective, the production invites the audience to discover entirely new layers of meaning within Kldiashvili’s text. This production beautifully demonstrates how vividly classical drama can speak to the present day, transforming a beloved masterpiece into a mirror for contemporary society and its enduring human concerns.

Founded in 1927, the Dmanisi Professional State Drama Theatre named after Zinaida Kverenchkhiladze officially launched on January 19, 1990, with a landmark premiere of "My Pen", directed by the renowned Temur Chkheidze. For decades, the theater has served as a creative home to icons of the Georgian stage, including Zinaida Kverenchkhiladze, Gogi Kharabadze, Davit Dvalishvili, and Otar Megvinetukhutsesi. Notably, it was on this stage in 2003 that the legendary Gogi Gegechkori performed his final role at the age of 80.

After being guided through various eras by leaders like Zinaida Kverenchkhiladze and Lasha Chkhvimiani, the theater entered a dynamic new chapter in March 2022 under the artistic direction of Giorgi Sikharulidze. Introducing the theater's first permanent ensemble, this era has sparked an intense creative revival featuring multiple premiering works and cross-theater co-productions. Today, Dmanisi's diverse and compelling repertoire boasts landmark titles including "Blood Wedding", "Khalde", "Host and Guest", "Heart of a Dog", and "Twelve Angry Men".
